History of Cape Town

The Third most populous city in South Africa is Cape Town. The local government is the City of Cape Town it is governed by 210 city council members who report to the 28 member executive council. The mayor is Helen Zille of the Democratic Alliance and she was chosen by the city council.

Robben Island a penitentiary island, which is 10 kilometres out to sea. Nelson Mandela was held here for many years. On his release he made his first public speech from the balcony of Cape Towns City Hall on 11th February 1990. This speech was the beginning of a new era for the country and four years later the first democratic election were held.

The major problems in the city are HIV, Aids, tuberculosis and drug related crimes. There have been murders targeting Somail shopkeepers. The poorer suburbs often have the highest crime rate.

The city has several well known tourist attractions Table Mountain, Table Mountain National Park, City Bowl and Table Mountain Cableway.

Table Mountain is a prominent land mark overlooking Cape town it is a flat top mountain and forms part of Table Mountain National Park. At the top the cable station offers walking trails and a view point. Rock climbing on the mountain is popular.

Table Mountain National Park has two well know landmarks the Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain. The park was previously known as the Cape Peninsula National Park and is managed by South African National Parks.

The City Bowl is a natural amphitheatre- shaped area bordered by Table Bay. Included in this area is the harbour Devils Peak, the central business district of Cape Town and the Company Gardens.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is one of Cape Towns popular tourist attraction it is a cableway to the top of Table Mountain. From the top cable station you can see views over Cape Town, Robben Island and Table Bay.

The famous Boulders Beach is best know for its colony of African penguins that settled there in 1982.

Beautiful beaches lay between the mountains of the peninsula. Wind surfers and kite surfers go to the west coast beaches where the wind and surfing conditions are good. False Bay beach water is often warmer then the water located on the Atlantic Coast.

The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront is a working harbour and attracts the highest rate of tourists than any other attraction. It offers entertainment and a variety of shopping. The marina houses the luxury apartments and world class hotels.

Why throughout South Africa’s history have the people of Cape Town played the part of demented liberal fools?
when compared to their more enlightened and obvioulsy more adequately educated neighbours to the north?
We had during apartheid a split in the National Party where those in the Cape were predominantly "verligtes" and those to the north were predominantly "verkramptes", this trend has continued to this day, any ideas what has caused and what continues o cause this trend?
Was their liberal dogma the result of severe brainwashing by the locals or have they as Mr Cash would state "been hit in the head too many times with their surfboards"?
Ayiza - What an intelligent and mature answer.
Thanks for yet again validating the research of Professor Richard Lynn through your intellectual defeciency.
Your sulking is amusing at best, grow up.
Push the Button - Your answer is meaningless as per usual.
Go spread your ANC dogma on another site, no one is interested in you delusional ramblings.
    Piss off.
Push the Button - I will humour you even though your further involvement in this question and any other for that matter is and has always been meaningless to myself, as you choose always to write extended parrot like essays which ultimately are little more than repeated liberal dogma dismissable by any reasonable person as drivel and never based on fact.
The people of Cape Town have for decades been known to be more liberal than their fellow South Africans to the North, you can label this as opinion or fact, it does not make any difference to me what the classification of such a statement would be in your mind as ultimately you are of a low intelligence as researched by Professor Richard Lynn.
Do you choose to believe it coincidence that in the dying years of apartheid, presidents PW Botha and even FW De Klerk were often forced to make speeches in Cape Town as they were not attended in Pretoria, Johannesburg and various other cities in the Transvaal, Free State and Northern Transvaal
Aditionally, the attendance of such speeches and political gatherings was not the major concern, their safety could not be guaranteed in these provinces where their liberal ideals and the dismantling of apartheid was widely rejected.
Is it also opinion that the Conservative Party of South Africa historically drew its major support from the northern areas, specifically Pretoria and the Northern Transvaal with very little support in the Cape, voter records are available?
From where does the HNP and conservatism draw its roots?
You can also reference Escel Rhoodies book, The Last Betrayal, where he on numerous occassions references the "verkramptes" of the north and the "veligtes" of the Cape should you so wish.
One would also wish to draw attention to the numerous sporting boycotts and protests that were evident in the Cape in the 1970's and 1980's in defiance of apartheid, I recall very few gatherings of such nature nature occuring in the Transvaal, Free State and Northern Transvaal?
Marrs Attacks - Yet again you fail to understand my statements in the context that they were made.
Where in my posting have I mentioned Richard Lynn's research in relation to Cape Tonian's?
My reference was made against the ethnicity of Push the Button who is not European or have you not managed to figure that out yet?
While the intelligence levels of Europeans in the Cape is not in question, their education and ideologies are and the source of such liberal ideology, you have not answered the question in the form it was asked, please reattempt and I will then analyse your answer in context of the given question.
It is also abundantly clear that you are a Cape Town liberal as evidenced by your continual defense of the ANC and majority rule even though they have proven inept and corrupt at best.
Push the Button - I wonder if yourself and Marrs Attacks are suffering from dyslexia as neither of you seem capable of reading statements in context of how they were implied.
EUROPEAN revolt and protest against apartheid was extremely uncommon in the north, this is a fact, not opinion, whereas such mass action by EUROPEANS in the Cape was common together with various boycotts, did I unintentionally imply that I was referring to non European protest which I was not?
Professor Richard Lynn's work has never been disproved by scientific analysis and comprehensive scientific study such as was undertaken by him where thousands of specimens were tested and the results documented.
Of course your referenced liberals would by internet source and scientific speculation, dispute and claim to have disproved his theories, sadly until I see record of a sampled African intelligence study as was undertaken by Professor Richard Lynn, his research remains credible.
Push the Button - Your entire argument against my statements is anecdotal in nature yet you now claim my source of information and references is anecdotal and cannot therefore be scientifically proven, amazing, why do you now not scientifically prove my statements to be incorrect seing that personal observation and opinion as well as reference books written by authors not approved by yourself are not to be recognised as valid on Yahoo Answers?
What you and the other liberals and non Europeans fail to understand is that in a third world country such as South Africa where liberal dogma has always been openly spread and promoted as well as the concealment of the inferiority of certain race groups is that the reality of most situations can only be documented in anecdotal form so as to appease the politically correct liberals such as yourself.
Push the Button - As you have clearly stated, Lynn's work has not been debunked and there exist merely arguments against such work, until such time as a scientific study is undertaken that disproves his research, it is valid in its entirety.
The notion that you are not liberal is laughable at best, not having voted for the ANC is not evidence of a lack of support for the ANC by yourself and the observed facts that I have yet to see you criticise the ANC or its actions on any occassion and yet have criticised and become involved in arguments with those who have criticised and noted the ANC as inept on numerous occassions is evidence enough that you are indeed a liberal and at best tacitly approve of the ANC and its policies.
Push the Button - Can I take it now that your meaningless rant is over and still with not even an attempt at answering the question which you have no admitted is "based on fact"?
Push - Actually as I have already stated by making reference to voting and political trends in the area, it is not purely a generalisation but an observed fact which you fail to recognise, you have therefore yet to answer what would be the result of a difference in political affiliation and ideals between the peoples of the Cape and those of the northern regions (for Europeans).

Hahaha…BULL, die verkrampt…….is that the reason why you don't want to come down South? ……… but if you ask many blacks who live in this part of the country they would tell you that Cape Town is full of verkramptes………even majority of blacks who just visit CT will tell you so……in your mind, the place might be a haven for verligtes……in reality it is not…..

I reckon that the south easterly wind, the famous "Kaapse Dokter" brings a breath of fresh air into their heads in the Cape. Living so high above sea level in the north, the people cannot benefit from this. So they put on their blinkers because they are faced with too much negativity from all sides.

While the inference of the question is interesting as is the mention of a trend, what factual proof of this trend is there beyond opinion or anecdotal evidence? Only once fact is provided can the question be duly answered.

Hardly meaningless but a tenant of debate. Instead of trying to draw attention away by personally attacking an asker, rather debate the point the asker brings up. Prove that I am delusional by fact. Profanity hardly scares me.

The people of the Cape have been “said” to be more liberal than their fellow South African’s – not proved. The various instances you mention are based on observance and using observance as evidence would infer the “more liberal” bias to be correct. That FW and PW chose to make speeches in Cape Town does not prove that Cape Town had a liberal bias either. Violence and riots in South Africa did not only occur in Cape Town and an equal number violent protest and riots happened outside of the Cape Town area. There are various books you can reference for this. A few are: A History of Inequality in South Africa 1652-2002 by Sampie Terreblanche, Women and children: Repression and resistance to apartheid in South Africa by Paulette Pierson-Mathy, Children of Resistance: Statements from the Harare Conference on Children, Repression, and the Law in Apartheid South Africa by Victoria Brittain, Beyond Fear by J Knighton-Fitt .

While I appreciate any good book recommendations, Eschel Rhoodie is hardly a credible source for unbiased information – he was part of the Muldergate information scandal after all – one of it’s chief proponents.

As for Richard Lynn, it’s interesting to note that he fails to connect his findings on IQ with specific historical occurrences to validate his findings. He has also disregarded various tests which show so called “black” participants consistently outperforming others. He also fails to take into account evidence from “minority educators” - Lorraine Monroe, Thaddeus Lott, Jaime Escalante, Gertrude Baker, Marva Collins, Herb Kohl and others who have produced candidates who perform at the top of the IQ ratings. Interestingly, another book, Intelligence Can Be Taught by Arthur Whimbey almost single handedly debunks Lynns results. Where Lynn does try to explain his findings as in the ice-age challenging environment he provides little fact to support his theory. Also because the book is based on the Bell Curve type argument there are inherent faults – research methods are flawed, and data almost always is massaged. The Bell Curve Flattened By Nicholas Lemann neatly and factually proves the Bell Curve Theory and by extension Lynn’s work as flawed arguments.

Lynn’s work has not been debunked – correct. But the foundation of his work – the Bell Curve has soundly been trounced by both conservative and liberal scientists. Any scientist will agree to the fact that you cannot build any form of research and subsequent conclusion on an unsound and flawed scientific platform.

The claim that there was an increased level of “European” involvement in the Cape versus other provinces is still not proved – merely inferred based on anecdotal evidence. And Rhoodie’s book can hardly be used as an objective benchmark – his very involvement in the Muldergate scandal illustrates his biased viewpoint.

The argument presented is based on fact gleaned from (among others) the books mentioned. The fact that my answer is termed anecdotal displays a lack of understanding of the meaning of the word. My anecdotal reference refers to the observed but not conclusively proved insistence that the Cape was and is somehow more liberal. No fact besides a book by a biased writer is referenced as proof, the rest based on limited observation and anecdotal evidence. Whether I approve of the book is not the issue, but the fact that the writer is biased – a biased writer by default cannot provide an objective result. While being a liberal sounds like fun I’m not – neither am I conservative or moderate and I’ve never voted for the ANC.

With regards to Lynn’s work, as stated previously – it has not yet been debunked, but the foundation upon which it was built, the Bell Curve, has – by scientists across the board. And a book mentioned earlier puts paid to the entire argument presented by Lynn.

Yes, as I’ve clearly stated, Lynn’s work has not been debunked - but the premise he built his argument has been. You cannot reach a faultless scientific conclusion based on a faulty premise. Which part of that is hard to understand? It doesn’t even take a scientist to reach that conclusion. Once again what observances are made about me and my politic affiliation are “laughably” inaccurate and rather far off the mark. A for effort though.

Rant is what this question is. There is no question but a generalisation turned into a question by adding a question mark. The question has been answered. It's just not the answer you're looking for.

where is your proof that this is the case ?
i know many verkramptes in capetown and ive met many "verligtes" as you put it, in the north and vice versa.you obviously dont get out much, do you ?

now tell me bull, if as you say is true, then how would you explain this in terms of the studies made by Professor Richard Lynn (you seem to keep mentioning his work when you run out of facts) ?
according to his (and your beliefs) , the colour of your skin directly effects your IQ levels.the lighter skinned you are, the more intelligent.
so according to your question, the whites in Capetown are more liberal than the whites in the north.you also label the southerners, fools.
am i correct in assuming then, that because you are a follower of Professor Richard Lynn, the white "fools" in Capetown must be a shade darker than the "enlightened" whites of the north ?
